There are at least four negatives to delaying the start of the scholarship process:
1. Just like any skill, it takes time to learn the scholarship process, write good, reusable essays, and simply learn how best to do things. The earlier a student starts, the better applicant they will be during senior year, because they have had more practice.
2. The Bryan Cameron Scholarship covers full tuition for 4 years at any college in the country. While this scholarship is very competitive, it’s a fantastic one to get used to the process of filling out scholarship applications and writing scholarship essays.
3. Kind of related to #1s and 2, but every scholarship not applied for is one that can’t be won. While it’s true that many juniors don’t win scholarships (in large part because they don’t apply), it’s not unheard of for juniors to win. My son won 3 scholarships in his junior year. One of the seniors I’m currently working with earned 2 scholarships during his junior year. I’ve even had sophomores (last year, one of my sophomores won multiple scholarships totaling $15,000) and freshmen (one of my current juniors won $2500 as a freshman) earn scholarships.
4. It’s important to do as much of the college admissions process as early as possible, and summer is a great time to do this. Many seniors miss out on a lot of scholarships in the fall because they are overwhelmed with the college admissions process. By doing as much of the college admissions stuff over the summer as possible, seniors have more time to work on scholarships during senior year.
Those are four reasons why I recommend starting the scholarship process as early as possible.
